COMMENTSThe rating of the Volvo V60 has been upgraded from 2011 to 2012. The car is unchanged and test results have beencarried over from the previous year. The 2012 rating reflects the performance of the V60 against Euro NCAP's latestrequirements. Based on data reviewed by Euro NCAP, a similar level of safety performance can be expected fromthe Volvo S60 (2010-)Adult occupantThe passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal impact, the windscreen pillar being deformed rearwardonly 1mm after the test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver andpassenger. Volvo showed that a similar level of protection would be provided for occupants of different sizes and tothose sat in different positions. In the side barrier test, the V60 scored maximum points, all body regions being wellprotected. In the more severe side pole impact, dummy readings of rib compression indicated marginal protection ofthe chest. The seat and its fixed-position head restraint provided good protection against whiplash injuries in a rearendcollision.Child occupantBoth child dummies were seated rearward-facing in the frontal and side impact tests. The V60 gained maximumpoints for its protection of the dummies in the dynamic tests. The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow arearward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, information provided to the driverregarding the status of the airbag is not sufficiently clear. A non-permanent pictogram-only label gives insufficientwarning of the dangers of using a rearward facing restraint in this seating position without first disabling the airbag.PedestrianThe bumper provided good protection in some of the areas tested and marginal in others. In most areas likely to bestruck by a child, the bonnet provided good protection against head injuries. In those areas likely to be struck by anadult's head, protection was predominantly poor but good in several of the areas tested.Safety assistElectronic Stability Control is standard equipment on the V60 and met Euro NCAP's test requirements. A driver-setspeed limitation device is also standard, along with a seatbelt reminder system for the driver, front passenger andrear seats.
