COMMENTSThe rating of the Subaru XV has been upgraded from 2011 to 2012. The car is unchanged and test results have beencarried over from the previous year. The 2012 rating reflects the performance of the XV against Euro NCAP's latestrequirements.Adult occupantIn the frontal impact, the passenger compartment remained stable. However, there was rupture of several spot-weldsin the driver's footwell and the car was penalised. Subaru have informed Euro NCAP that they have madeimprovements to the welding in this area. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of thedriver and passenger. However, structures in the dashboard were thought to pose a risk to occupants of differentsizes and to those sat in different positions. In the side barrier test, the XV scored maximum points with goodprotection of all body areas. However, in the more severe side pole test, dummy readings of rib compressionindicated weak chest protection. The seat and head restraint provided good protection against whiplash injuries inthe event of a rear-end collision.Child occupantBased on dummy readings in the dynamic crash tests, the XV scored maximum points for its protection of the 18month infant. In the frontal impact, forward movement of the 3 year dummy, sat in a forward facing restraint, was notexcessive. In the side impact, both dummies were properly contained by their restraints, minimising the possibility ofdangerous head contacts. The front passenger airbag of the XV is by default off, allowing a rearward facing childrestraint to be used in that seating position. The airbag is turned on only when an occupant of a suitable size isdetected in the seat. The system met Euro NCAP's requirements and was rewarded.PedestrianThe bumper scored maximum points for its protection of pedestrians' legs. However, the front edge of the bonnetwas poor in all areas tested and scored no points. In most areas where a child's head might strike, the bonnetprovided good protection. However, the protection provided in those areas where an adult's head would strike waspredominantly poor or marginal.Safety assistElectronic stability control is standard equipment on the XV, as is a seatbelt reminder system for the driver, passenger and rear seats. A speed limitation device is not offered on the XV.
